Prompt claiming....still open!

Sorry for the late post -- I had something which fortunately turned out not to be the flu, but still knocked me out for a few days.

Anyway, given the low response rate and people's busy schedules, we'll leave prompt claiming, such as it is, open during the writing period.

Guidelines, Round Two

Okay, the good news (or bad news) is that it was made immediately clear to me, once I created an AO3 collection, that it would not work for us, because almost none of the characters contained in the books are canonical character tags on AO3. Yes, we could fix this, but I'm just going to file that under "too much work right now."

This means that things will run pretty much the same as last time! A couple of important changes:

  • Someone asked about submitting art. I am fine with having this be a challenge for all kinds of fanworks.

  • The writing period is shorter this time: four weeks instead of six. I realize that it's on the short end, but I'm trying not to clash too much with yuletide, and things are pretty informal. If you post after the "official" posting period ends, no big deal.

For your convenience, here is an updated version of the guidelines:

Second round questions!

So it dawned on me that I need to get this going soon if I don't want to be smack on top of Yuletide.

On the other hand, people may want to wait and see how Yuletide nominations shake out, because some of the Trek books that feature original characters are probably eligible.

Last round we had a week for submitting prompts, a week for claiming, and roughly six weeks for writing. Sticking to that schedule would mean that we'd be looking at posting in early November. Or we could make it slightly less official this time -- just gather prompts and run wild.

I am also looking at AO3's prompt meme hosting -- any opinions? I personally adore having things on AO3 so I can load them on my Kindle, and hosting it there would put some automation in the process. On the other hand, this group is not so big that administering it is an onerous task.

Regardless, maybe we look at submitting prompts starting Monday, September 16?

Rihannsu books in Yuletide

As you may or may not know, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide has new mods this year, and there are some modifications in the rules (some of which have already been repealed due to popular protest, thank heaven).

But! the tightening up of the "main characters from major fandom are ineligible in the subfandom" rule means that, as one of the new mods just told me, the Rihannsu books may be eligible this year (instead of ruled out out of hand as last year).  IOW, you wouldn't be able to nominate or request Kirk or Spock or McCoy (for obvious reasons), but if you nominate Rihannsy fandom with, say, Arrhae and Ael and Naraht as the characters, there's a good chance they'll be approved!

Another round?

Given that the new movie has come out, and people are either enthusiastic about it or wanting to fix it, is there any interest in another round of book-based stories?

Illustration for "Three T'kay Stories"

Around six months ago, as you might remember, [personal profile] ljc posted an excerpt from From The Terran Coyote to The Klingon K'Ortar: Tricksters of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants by M. Thadiun Bodner, which contained accounts of three of the earliest surviving Vulcan mythological tales involving T'kay, the Vulcan trickster.

I was quite intrigued by the stories, but was disappointed that the text-only archive version of From The Terran Coyote to The Klingon K'Ortar that she'd recovered had only descriptions of the illustrations, rather than the original color plates.

So, since I live in the area and have access to the library at Starfleet Academy's Annapolis campus, I offered to search the collection of the art library there to see if I could find other images of the objects in question and reconstruct, as far as possible, the original pages.

It took a fair amount of looking - and I'm not entirely sure these are the exact same artifacts the original article referenced - but I believe I have, finally, found them all, or close facsimiles thereof, and with [personal profile] ljc's permission, I'm sharing them with you.

How T'Kay Stole Fire:[Insert - Illustration: Fire Escapes The Glass Bowl, tapestry fragment dating to 8th Century BCE] )

How T'Kay Cheated Death:[Insert - Illustration: Death at the River, fragment of undated bowl, private collection] )

T'Kay and the Chief's Son:[Insert - Illustration: T'Kay with Saya, architectural detail of the frieze showing the trickster T'Kay with a circular pitcher of saya, recovered from the ruins of the P'Jem Monastery, Epsilon Indi III] )

ETA: Oh! Also, while I was hunting down these illustrations I found a kids' xenoanth book that had three more illustrated T'kay stories; would anybody be interested in those being posted here eventually?

New Livejournal community for Trek novel-based fic

I said I was going to do it if people were interested, and I've finally gotten around to it. :-) I've created a community for fan works based on the authorized but non-canon works of Star Trek (eg, Pocket Books novels, but also works based on comics or video games would be acceptable.)

It's <a href="http://community.livejournal.com/trek_bookverse/>the Star Trek Bookverse</a>, and it awaits your fic. I hope that many of the people who wrote fic for this fest will come join us and post their fics!
