Sorry for the late post -- I had something which fortunately turned out not to be the flu, but still knocked me out for a few days.

Guidelines, Round Two

Okay, the good news (or bad news) is that it was made immediately clear to me, once I created an AO3 collection, that it would not work for us, because almost none of the characters contained in the books are canonical character tags on AO3. Yes, we could fix this, but I'm just going to file that under "too much work right now."

This means that things will run pretty much the same as last time! A couple of important changes:

Someone asked about submitting art. I am fine with having this be a challenge for all kinds of fanworks.

The writing period is shorter this time: four weeks instead of six. I realize that it's on the short end, but I'm trying not to clash too much with yuletide, and things are pretty informal. If you post after the "official" posting period ends, no big deal.

Second round questions!

So it dawned on me that I need to get this going soon if I don't want to be smack on top of Yuletide.

On the other hand, people may want to wait and see how Yuletide nominations shake out, because some of the Trek books that feature original characters are probably eligible.

Last round we had a week for submitting prompts, a week for claiming, and roughly six weeks for writing. Sticking to that schedule would mean that we'd be looking at posting in early November. Or we could make it slightly less official this time -- just gather prompts and run wild.

I am also looking at AO3's prompt meme hosting -- any opinions? I personally adore having things on AO3 so I can load them on my Kindle, and hosting it there would put some automation in the process. On the other hand, this group is not so big that administering it is an onerous task.

Regardless, maybe we look at submitting prompts starting Monday, September 16?

Offically, of course, today is the last day of the posting period. I know many writers, me included, have been delayed by real life, injuries, con plague (*cough, hack*), and other issues. That's totally fine.

Late tonight or tomorrow morning, I'll post a message officially closing the posting period and throwing all prompts open to anyone who's interested in writing them. We still definitely want to see your stories when they're finished -- post anything and everything here so we can all enjoy it.

Story posting is open, and I am excited!

You may post the story to the community or post a link to the story hosted on your journal or website. If your story is long enough to require multiple entries, please post a link in the community instead of posting multiple entries to the community.

Please tag your story in the format novel: title. For example, novel: Uhura's Song or novel: The Pandora Principle. If your story is a crossover or encompasses multiple books, use a separate tag for each one, and separate your tags with commas.

Given the small size of the fest, I don't really think any other tags are necessary, but speak up if you think I'm wrong.

Just a reminder, the posting period begins soon!

You can start posting on Monday, August 10th, and posting runs through the 24th. This does not mean that we will stand over you with a stick and make you stop writing at 11:59PM on the 9th. Feel free to post at any time from the 10th-24th.

After that, we will still welcome stories. The prompts list will be thrown open to everyone, and hopefully we will get even more stories!

On another note, what do people think about tagging? I'm inclined to suggest that authors tag their stories with the name of the novel or novels they're writing about. Suggestions?

Remember, prompt claiming ends Sunday. All the prompts that have been claimed thus far have the author's name(s) listed next to the prompt, so you can skim and see what's unclaimed. But remember that you can also write a prompt that someone else has already claimed -- we're just keeping track of what's what.

And we're off! We ended up with 111 prompts, which makes me go WOW and also Eeeeeee.

To claim a prompt or prompts, leave a comment specifying the number of the prompt you're claiming.

Prompts are listed by book title or short story title or series title, depending. I encourage you to look at the whole list, since some authors have slightly complicated universes (Diane Duane, I am looking at you). The last line of the prompt specified the universe. "Original" means the original canon; "Reboot" means the new movie canon; "Original or Reboot" means you can write in either canon.

Reminders: A prompt can be claimed by multiple people, but we think it would be nice if authors made an effort to choose a prompt that hasn’t been claimed by several people. We also encourage authors to limit themselves to two prompts. There is no minimum or maximum word count. Posting runs from August 10-24.

Please let us know if I've missed anything or made any mistakes, or if you have any questions.

Welcome to the Star Trek Novel Fic Fest!

ellen_fremedon and I are your mods. We'll be posting a schedule and FAQ soon, but I wanted to get this rolling and give people a chance to sort out their subscriptions and the like.

My original brilliant plan was to have a comm set up here and mirrored on LJ. Unfortunately, Dreamwidth does not allow you to mirror posts to a community, which makes perfect sense. So we'll be hosting the fest here. If you have a Dreamwidth account, you have nothing to worry about.

If you have a Livejournal account, you also have nothing to worry about, because Dreamwidth allows you to post using your LJ account as an OpenID. If you need help setting up your open ID account, check the very helpful FAQ. You may also want to look at DW's guide to markup.

You do not need to be a member of the community to post. Anonymous comments are also allowed, though they will be screened to restrict spam.

If you would prefer to watch this community on your LJ flist, I have created a syndicated feed, available here. Friend it, and anything posted here will show up on your LJ friendslist.
